Tromsø Annual Rowing Regatta

Tromsø 59st Annual Rowing Regatta – Saturday 18 June 2011

Since June 1952, Tromsø Roklubb (rowing club) has arranged a rowing regatta using old-style wooden lifeboats. Several teams divided between three classes – men’s, women’s and mixed – take part in the competition. Each team, consisting of six rowers and one coxswain, compete for the best rowing speed and best costume. The competition takes place in Tromsø harbour in the centre of town, near the marketplace, where the crowd of spectators cheer for their favourite teams. Watching the regatta is free of charge for everyone, but to compete, a registration fee of NOK 1000 per team is collected in advance.

This year, the regatta is held on Saturday, 18 June. The opening parade starts out at 11:30 in the morning from Prostneset (near the Roald Amundsen statue and the Hurtigruta dock), and continues through Storgata to the town square/marketplace. The first team starts rowing at 12:00 and the last one out should be finished around 15:00.
